Learning About The Different Types of Massage

There are various types of techniques out there and each variety uses a particular approach and serious of motions to relieve muscle tension and induce relaxation. Let’s take a look at some of the most common varieties…

Asian Style

We covered this topic in-depth in a previous article, but let’s quickly recap – the Asian approach uses a technique that focuses on promoting the free flow of xi (or energy seen as the “life force”) throughout the body. This is done by working out knots in muscle tissue and promoting healthy blood flow! The overall aim of Asian massage is to bring your body back into a healthy balance so that you can enjoy holistic health.

Deep Tissue Style

Conversely, the deep tissue style is a style of treatment that isn’t generally used for relaxation purposes as the technician uses a much heavier touch in slow, deep strokes to release deep knots in muscle tissue. This type of technique is best for those with underlying muscle conditions or chronic pain. Some people will tell you that they have experienced extreme pain when undergoing deep tissue sessions, but this is probably linked to underlying conditions that they are seeking massage to relieve. Still, while it’s for the greater good, at Summer Spa, we believe that massage should not equal pain!

Swedish Style

Swedish massage focuses on promoting relaxation by using long strokes that are designed to promote the flow of blood throughout the body. Swedish massage strokes focus on working in the direction of the flow of blood back to the heart in the body. This is a relaxing form of massage that is similar in some ways to Asian techniques, but the Asian technique is a little more all-encompassing with a focus on holistic health or a balance in the body and mind.

Sports Style

Sports massage is a technique that focuses on athleticism and improving athletic performance and relieving sports-related injuries. The sports technique differs from other techniques mentioned above because the technique used varies depending on the reason for the massage. For example, deeper strokes may be used if an athlete has a knotted muscle that is affecting their performance.
